It seems that it is on every sign in front of every dental office in America - “Cosmetic Dentist.”  What exactly does that mean?  Is cosmetic dentistry a specialty?

Dental boards and governing bodies prohibit anyone from calling themselves a cosmetic dental specialist.  To use the term specialist, you must complete a certified post graduate program like endodontists and oral surgeons do.

Many of the services provided under the heading of cosmetic dentistry are covered in dental school and are included under the heading of general dentistry.  So what is cosmetic dentistry and what is a cosmetic dentist?

Cosmetic dentistry is a range of services that provides an esthetically pleasing result.  The focus of the work is designed to enhance the smiles visual impact.  Cosmetic dentists provide these specified services.

That leaves the next obvious question.  So what differentiates one cosmetic dentist from the next?  Simple – training.  Additional post graduate training is an option, not a requirement.  While any dentist can provide these services, few pursue extensive post graduate education in the latest techniques and technologies.
