Dentistry – Crown It

Dental crowns, also commonly known as ‘caps’, conjure up images of Hollywood movie stars and their bright white smiles - rows of white squares that deliver glamour and beauty.  Today’s dentistry crown is used not only to give that Hollywood smile, but to restore and maintain the health and function of the whole mouth.

While the front teeth are what we see, it is the back teeth that enable us to chew, maintain muscle function and form, and support the position of the front smile.  Without the back teeth in strong stable shape, your smile drifts to open spaces and inappropriate wear and tear breaks them down.  So when one of these vital tooth structures is damaged by disease or trauma, don’t pull – crown!

Crowns are also a treatment option in reshaping and whitening the entire smile, adding strength and endurance.

To place a crown, disease and damage are first removed.  The remaining enamel is removed and the internal tooth structure shaped and strengthened.  An impression is then taken for a dental lab to fabricate the dentistry crown to look like natural tooth structure.  A temporary crown made of plastic is placed until the porcelain crown is ready.  It is then cemented in place.

A porcelain crown can restore function, maintain health and deliver glamorous results.
